Feel the Fen Blow bey,
It rattles the bones
Through graves long forgotten,
In church yards of stone
Lazy old Easterly
Howls like a dog,
Then covers the dykes
In a blanket of fog
Reddens the hands
Travelled from foreign parts
Who harvest the land,
Picking artichoke hearts.
Gets up the tails
Of the long-legged hares,
That run for their lives
From the Gamekeeper’s glares
Swirls round the bench
And kisses the face
Of dear Molly Watkins,
At peace in her place
Brucks up the fruit trays
Stacked high the markets.
Makes pots goo a gutzer,
Snaps flowers in baskets
Snatches the bread
From the men eating dockey
Whilst sat on memorials,
Saddened with poppies
The sky’s blue as Woad dye
So stretch out your hand
And feel the Fen Blow, bey

I’ve been painting for 6 years now. During lockdown, I’ve been busy with commissions but also painting live on Facebook every Wednesday at 11am in the hope of providing some company to people at home. I then put the videos onto YouTube. Here are some of the paintings I have done over the past few months:
When the country went into lockdown, I felt isolated and thought, I can’t be the only one! So I decided to start painting live on my Facebook page every Wednesday at 11am. I think it’s been a success, it’s not that I have a lot of views live but loads watch later. I try to be creative and think of various things to paint, florals, landscape, seascapes, symbolic etc. I work from my studio in the garden.
I was born in Great Yarmouth, lived in Norway during my teen years then back to Yarmouth. There I met and married my hubby and we moved to Peterborough with our two young sons. Now they’ve left home, we moved to Sutton Bridge. I started painting as an escape from the day job! A high school cover supervisor! I’m totally self taught from watching YouTube. I started selling 6 or 7 years ago and have never lost the feeling of utter amazement that someone actually likes my paintings enough to pay for them!

What a refreshing painting! Lisa Salisbury, the artist, says:

A local maker who sells her work online via Folksy, Clair has been making these lovely creations for some time. During lockdown, she created some new work and learned some new patterns.

Interesting subjects, and textures. Living locally for 11 years, Simone wanted to share her work with us although she hasn’t created in a while. We hope this inspires her to do some more.
Some pieces created during lockdown by a local family, they have tried out all kinds of art and craft and really enjoy doing something together!
Taking a closer look at some interesting architecture around Wisbech, we found some doors and windows that we took a liking to!

Every day’s the same
Except today, the day my Swallow came
Swooping low, wheeling back
An accomplished aerial acrobat.
Taking a moment to stop and chat,
he told the tale of his journey
From South Africa to here.
Asked politely where I’d been.
The big Tesco last week
and to the park each day,
only for an hour though,
I sighed in reply.
He told me about his flock.
Making murmurations,
flying in formation,
roosting together.
I shared anecdotes
Of cats interrupting
Work from home conference calls
and virtual socialising fails
He cocked his head
Nodded once.
took flight and left.
Will he return?
Tomorrow, I’ll be waiting.
No more time to wallow
I’ll stay at home, hoping
looking for my swallow.

Natural princess in a basement room
Raised as a maid to stepmother the Queen
She learnt deportment and to serve unseen
A royal sire but from a common womb
Descends to county town from palace heights
Walking from the city into the fen
This is the quiet bird, the humble wren
She is granted grace of an Inward Light
Sat so silent in the Meeting House hall
Summer she took her scythe to the fields
Winter, silver is spun from flax and wool
So distant from midnight chimes at the ball
The mistress at bringing in the yield
And so her small pantry is rendered full
